In 1894, the segregation laws were in effect in New Orleans, which forced the upper class Creoles to live on the West Side with the poor, uneducated American blacks. The mixture of the two styles of music and two cultures clashed and created the start of Jazz. There were Bop, Traditional, Swing, Dixieland, and Latin influences of Jazz. Jazz has a variety of forms.

Rock and roll originated from jazz, rhythm and blues, and the folk music genres. This type of music began to focus more on lyrics rather than mostly instrumentation as it was in jazz music. During this time, youth rebellion was a major emphasis on the style of rock and roll as well as the beginning of technological change. Entertainers such as Elvis Presley and The Beatles emerged beginning to create the boy band phenomena.
